Lois May is a Ballardong yorga with heritage links to Whadjuk country. For more than two decades she worked for the Department of Education WA as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer firstly in the Perth Metropolitan region and later in the Great Southern region. In these roles she was involved in groundbreaking programs to support Aboriginal students and their families to increase school retention rates through to graduation. She then went on to work as an Aboriginal Cultural Liaison Officer for not-for-profit organisations such as Centrecare, Communicare and Yorgum. Prior to holding those positions she was a hairdresser and residential childcare worker in Perth and specialist aide for children with learning disabilities in La Perouse Community School in NSW.
